Natural wool fibres and botanical dyes in earthy tones

Crafted Responsibly

Beautiful rugs shouldn't cost the earth. Our commitment to sustainability runs through every fibre we weave.

Since 1986, KnotCraft has believed that luxury and responsibility are not opposites. Every decision — from sourcing raw wool to packaging the finished rug — is guided by our respect for people and planet.

Natural & Renewable Materials

We use only natural fibres — New Zealand wool, hand-spun Indian wool, organic cotton, and sustainably harvested silk. These materials are biodegradable, renewable, and free from synthetic chemicals. Our wool is sourced from farms committed to ethical animal husbandry and land stewardship.

Botanical & Low-Impact Dyes

Over 80% of our colour palette comes from plant-based dyes — pomegranate rind, indigo, walnut husk, madder root, and turmeric. Where botanical dyes aren't feasible, we use GOTS-certified low-impact dyes that minimise water contamination and toxic runoff. Our dyeing process recycles up to 90% of water used.

Fair Wages & Artisan Welfare

Every KnotCraft rug is made by skilled artisans who are paid above living wages. We work directly with weaving cooperatives in India, Nepal, and Turkey — no middlemen — ensuring fair compensation reaches the hands that do the work.

We invest in healthcare, education, and childcare programmes in our partner communities, and we conduct annual third-party audits to ensure no child labour or forced labour exists in our supply chain.

Lower Carbon Footprint

Hand-knotted rugs require zero electricity to produce — each knot is tied by hand on a wooden loom powered only by human skill. Compared to machine-made alternatives, our production process generates a fraction of the carbon emissions.

We offset 100% of our shipping emissions through verified reforestation partnerships. Our goal is to achieve carbon-negative operations by 2028.

Thoughtful Packaging

Our rugs ship wrapped in unbleached cotton dust bags — reusable for storage — inside recycled, recyclable cardboard. We've eliminated all single-use plastic from our packaging since 2023. Hang tags and care cards are printed on FSC-certified recycled paper with soy-based inks.

Built to Last, Not Landfill

The most sustainable product is one that lasts. Our rugs are engineered for decades of daily use — most outlive their owners. We offer a lifetime repair service for any KnotCraft rug, and our trade-in programme gives pre-loved rugs a second life through restoration and resale.
